This is one of the more interesting books in the socio-political field that I have come across recently. The book effectively details how capitalism evolved to be the greatest engine of wealth production but now in some places is morphing into fascist 'statism' which threatens liberty as well as progress. This book is digestible by the average person but someone with a economics or political science background would find this to be an ideal source because it succeeds in making its points in a very succinct fashion which makes it a quick read. Respected economists are quoted in many places which will be perfect for the technical reader but may be a bit detailed for the person just seeking as casual comparison of the two economic structures. For the economics oriented person, this book is written from the Austrian point of view and reveres scholars like Hayek, Hazlitt and Mises. To my satisfaction, the book is critical of economist John Maynard Keynes and the horrendous price (literally and figuratively) that economies have paid for adhering to his philosophies. It even offers that Keynes volunteered to write the forward of the Nazi edition of his most famous work. This book is well worth the price.Product details

Excellent compilation of articles. Also provides an intimate history of some of the most influential people.
There seems to be lots of confusion regarding the meanings of words like "fascism", "socialism", "capitalism", "Marxism", etc. Mr. Rockwell helped me to better understand some of fine points and distortions and history of the different terms. It was an enjoyable read and I liked that it was broken up into easy to digest pieces.
Instead of offering intellectual criticisms, this book put people's lives side by side. It offers a comparison/contrast, of people the elite liked and didn't like, it poses the question, who will history remember those who believed in principles and those we threw principle out the window for power. Also the lecture on the late Scholastics was very good at it shows a continuous line of thought from the past to the present.
I've been a daily visitor to [...] for several years. Needless to say I was excited to get this book. The material is great, and I highly recommend it as far as content. My only complaint is this each chapter is simply a reprint of a speech and/or article that is already available at no charge on Lew's website. I realized this two chapters in, so I came back to to see if the description mentions that the book is a collection of speeches and/or previously written articles. As far as I can tell there was nothing to indicate this before I purchased the book except the "look inside" feature. I suppose I could have figured this out had I clicked on each chapter title in the table of contents.
Now I have no problem paying to have all these articles bound together. Considering the large print especially, this book is a great value at this price. Also, I'm more than happy to help support the Mises Institute and Lew personally, although at this price I doubt there is much margin above the cost of printing. So if you're a proponent of liberty, give to the cause by buying this book.
The content consists of articles written and speeches given by Lew Rockwell, woven together in support of a point of view (that of individual freedom, i.e. capitalism) that differs far from the point of view supported by the mainstream (that of government planning and control, i.e. fascism). Those familiar with Mises, Rothbard and Austrian economics will love it. And those that aren't will have their eyes opened to what the modern world has become, perhaps for the first time. As always, Mr. Rockwell is very clear in his thoughts and the words he chooses to express them. This, and the purpose and passion with which he writes, makes him a pleasure to read. Read this book and you will understand why George Karlin used to say that "Germany may have lost the second world war, but fascism won it."
The only reason it's not 5 stars is that it felt a bit repetitive in the message of government is the source of distortion in markets, etc. His premise and reasoning is of course completely solid, I would have just liked to read more about examples of this than the repetition I feel was there. However, what he provided was very good and certainly persuasive. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the reasons behind poor economies and all of the tactics behind maintaining the ideology of government as God, protector, friend, etc..It was a bit of a shocker to me to see how very near the current system actually is to Fascism, instead of just a soft form of it, or a middle-of-the-road type of thing. It was certainly an eye-opener, even though I've read and studied quite a bit on topics like this.
This is an outstanding summary of Austrian Economics and illustrates the postion of the United States as an economic model. Mr Rockwell has done a great service in reviewing the history of economics and revealing the problem of group think that pervades the academy and government. I have read the kindle version because I was on a ski trip, but you want to get the printed version so that you can share this work. Hopefully it is a gentle enough approach so that the reader will come to understand exactly what fascism is without the inflammatory historical baggage interferring with the analysis. It is an analytical framework that the main stream media would do well to incorporate into their commentary so that the voters will be better informed about our political discourse
