I have to say that this series is quite close to loosing my interest in it. The book blurb looks quite interesting but at the end of the book my feelings about it was quite … meh!

It is not that the book is outrageously bad it is just that it fizzles around spending waaaay too much time on soap opera style crap, emotional outbursts, romance a’la Hollywood etc. than on actually developing some real urban fantasy adventure story.

I want adventure, action, magic and urban fantasy to be the core of the story. Sure, there are some of than in the book but it is not at the center of the stage. It is just more as a backdrop for all the personal secrets, vendettas and machinations. I’m tired of reading crap like “trust me”, “I have my reasons” or other variants of totally nonsensical excuses for why the truth cannot be told.

Worst of it all is the demigod who makes me think of the Hulk vs Loki scene in Avengers every time he is mentioned. PUNY GOD! Christ, I would expect more of a demigod than to act like a stupid doormat to some arrogant, spoiled and generally unlikable woman. Worse, the author decided to use this despicable character for some major plot elements as well. Not that this was much of a surprise but still…

There are of course some redeeming parts to the book as well. Nikki as well as some of the other characters are quite enjoyable, the writing is generally quite okay and the story still has promise if only the author could lay off the soap opera crap.

I hope that he series shapes up soon otherwise we are close to three strikes for Nikki Glass.

Deadly Descendant Nikki Glass Series Jenna Black 9781451606805 Books Reviews

I was thrilled to find te second book to this serries. I truly enjoyed it; From begining to end. I only hope that there's lots more to come in this serries and soon. this serries is as good or better (and runs along the same lines) even as such serries written by Adams, Caine, Estep, Feehan, Hamilton, Harrison, Kenyon, Lui, M. Rice, Thurman, Ward, and ect. ect.. There's so many (too many) to name; that i love and consider favorites of mine. My point being that J. Black is definately amoung them. I'm truly looking forward to the next book in this serries! Thanks, Kimber in Clovis, CA.
Deadly Descendant takes on the same easy pace as its predecessor, Dark Descendant, but with more heat, action, and emotion! Jenna Black gives readers a greater look into some of Nikki's Liberi housemates, especially, Jamaal. Jamaal is a very out of control character and completely mysterious in the first book, so it's intriguing to see him slightly open up and drop his guard around Nikki.

The assignment Nikki is handed in Deadly Descendant is creepy and just a little shy of downright scary! The crazy descendant of the death-god Anubis is on the hunt and armed with powers unfamiliar, and very harmful, to Nikki and some of the Liberi. The plot leads readers to believe that Nikki might not be able to succeed this time because there is more than one foe working against her. Anderson's traumatized wife is letting her claws show, but this unexpected twist is entertaining and adds to the overall build of suspension. The novel's conclusion is clever, leaving readers excited, awed, and aching for more action.

Black has written the perfect sequel to Dark Descendant and its only a matter of time before she impresses urban fantasy fans with the next Nikki Glass installment.
Nikki Glass is back at it again! When people start dying it makes Nikki and the others take notice but when the enemy comes in adn asks for help it raises brows. Is it a trap? Could there be more to it then just them needing help? There is something amiss but what? As they set out to find the deadly person behind this they have to keep an eye on each others backs and keep the ones that mean something to her now safe. Or as safe as can be. The thing is not only does Nikki find the god they are after, she pisses him off.. that is never a smart thing to do in and of itself but what he doesn't know is that Nikki Glass, bad a** she is not one to be messed with. Her scars will only make her stronger in this fight.

This is the second book in this series and I had high hopes for it at the end of the last one. Lots of interesting characters and some people in need of a serious butt kicking by the end of the first, so I was disappointed when the kick butt heroine decided to put more effort into a relationship with the worst possible boyfriend ever than into learning what she could do to keep herself alive. Lot of navel gazing in this book, and I was completely tired of Jamal by the end, sort of hoping he was going to make a big sacrifice and clear the area for someone more interesting. The writing quality is high, and Nikki has a lot of potential, but the book gets bogged down in a quagmire of character angst.

The most interesting character was the villian in this piece, and I was hoping he would actually team up with Nikki for that aforementioned butt kicking session. Still, he made an interesting villian, and the fights and action are well written.

Romance, lust, and good romp in the hay can be part of the story,(unless it's a romance story or erotica then fill it up) but the character's continuing improvement and reasonable actions count for more. Plus, someone who always hits what they aim at should be a lot more useful in a fight.

I haven't talked myself into buying the third in the series since the reviews seem to indicate it continues in the same vein, and this book didn't really leave me too interested in what might happen next.

3.5 stars for good writing, interesting characters and a world with many possibilities. Maybe I'll decide to buy the next one...someday
