I’m embarrassed to admit how much I enjoyed Dead Sky Morning, but the fact is; towards the end I wanted to know what was going to happen and I couldn’t put it down. Granted it was like a bad B movie that would have been right at home on the Creature Double Features of my childhood – but it was actually fairly atmospheric and a little bit genuinely creepy! This time out Perry and Dex are filming an Experiment in Terror episode on a deserted island off the coast of British Columbia. D’Arcy Island or The Island of Death – as it is affectionately monikered; was a dumping ground, excuse me – “remote colony” for Chinese lepers at the turn of the century. While the island isn’t very far off shore, rip tides make it fairly unreachable – hard to get on, hard to get off – the perfect place to dump people you plan to have die there. Rumor has it the island is haunted since so many unhappy people tragically died there. Campers that have been on the island were plagued by “strange occurrences” and most don’t stay overnight. Naturally Dex and Perry are planning a weekend sojourn.

I enjoyed the story despite that I am not liking either Perry or Dex as individuals any better – and thus really have no investment in their eventual relationship; other than strictly for “Oh look! A train wreck” entertainment. I’m actually cutting Perry a little more slack because she is young (by today’s standards). She’s just turning 23 – which I juxtapose to my personal experience of 23 - which involved being fully independent, married, working full time and self-sufficient; so, I really can’t respect her when in response to a disagreement with her parents she seriously contemplates “systematically trashing her bedroom and putting a hole in the wall”. Nothing says “treat me like an adult” like the willful destruction of someone else’s property. I know that her Dad is forbidding her to continue with the show - but get your grown self out of the house and it won’t be a problem. I am however cutting her slack because she sees ghosts, and they talk to her cryptically and try to kill her and THAT can’t be easy.

Dex on the other hand, I am not feeling like cutting any slack. He’s 32. He’s old enough to know better; and he’s selfishly playing both Perry and his live-in girlfriend Jenn – and people are getting hurt. His reasoning doesn’t matter. He’s simply too old to – if not have his act together – be so self-involved that he doesn’t consider the potential consequences of his actions. In this episode the inappropriate flirting continues and careens well over the line into inappropriate behavior. Of course, Perry expects him to leave Jenn – which doesn’t seem to be happening. She excuses her own behavior with the belief that Dex really doesn’t want to be with Jenn and isn’t happy…however again, grown adults can generally figure stuff out – it’s not like they’ve been married for years and have their finances and all other aspects of their lives intertwined.

Aside from lots of flirting and inappropriate sexy times, Dex and Perry also succumb to the atmosphere of the island and there are lots of moments of suspicion, distrust and outright animosity towards each other as the spirits of the island pit them against each other. We learn a bit more about each of them – in terms of Perry’s abilities and both their pasts.

As Dex says about the anonymous internet posters insulting Perry on the show’s blog (calling her fat, ugly and talentless; FYI – we also get confirmation that her weight problem is in her head); “Haters gonna hate” – and Experiment in Terror is becoming a pretty addictive series with the couple you (or at least I) love to hate.

Dead Sky Morning Experiment in Terror #3 eBook Karina Halle Reviews

From 1894 to 1924 D'Arcy island was inhabited by (Primarily Chinese) lepers; forgotten by their government these people were left to fend for themselves save for the supply ships that would drop off food, opium, and coffins....40 people perished on this island which is now a National Park Reserve...this is the setting for Perry and Dex's next ghostly adventure....in this installment we get a deeper glimpse into the relationship between Dex and Perry and their unique chemistry... secrets are revealed about both of their pasts leading to paranoia and distrust....however, through these trials we witness their growing connection and need for one another...a thrilling and, at times, terrifying adventure that twists and turns along the way leaving the reader wondering what is going to happen next...4 heart pounding stars)
~so far, in all of our experiences together, there always was that moment that I could have turned back and I never ever did. Even if it scared me to the core, to my very soul and fiber of my being, I still went forward into the unknown. Some may call that brave. I don’t think I’d call it that. Stubborn beyond repair seemed more fitting.~

I thought maybe, Ms. Halle had set the bar too high with Red Fox-I mean seriously, how do you out-creep skinwalkers, demonic animals and an abundance of mis-trust?! But she's done it, boy has she ever. Dead Sky Morning not only ramps up the chills, the terror, the edge of your seat anxiety, but it brings the relationship between our dynamic duo to a whole new level-a totally different playing field, and not always in a good way. Completely isolated on seriously haunted island, surrounded by things that go bump in the night-and day-with no one to rely on but each other, the one person they each trust beyond all others, gets put to the test. The island not only makes them question their sanity, but it makes them start to question each other, and slowly they start to turn on one another just when they need the support the most. That was one of the hardest things to watch.

~I didn’t want to feel guilty about this. I needed to remember that he wasn’t innocent. Even though he should know better, he would rather think I was crazy than think I could actually be seeing ghosts. That said a lot about how he felt about me.~

Perry broke my heart in this book. She is as strong and willful as ever-sure she's scared out of her mind half the time, but she never backs down-that is my definition of courage. But she's also incredibly fearful of her abilities-what if Dex starts to question her sanity? What if they try to lock her up? What else is hiding in the shadows waiting to pounce at her?? She's also trying to deal with her feelings for Dex. The more time she spends with him, the further she falls in love with him-knowing she can't have him, knowing he belongs to another, knowing he still keeps things from her, and completely unsure of how he really feels where she's concerned. He's so very good at keeping a tight leash on his emotions. Sometimes she thinks she sees something in his eyes, reads something from his words, but with Dex being Dex, it's hard to tell when he's being serious or his natural flirty, sexual innuendo laden self. I've never hated a game of truth or dare more-what a wickedly heartbreaking bombshell!

Dex as always remains mostly a mystery. With every question about him we get answered, three more crop up. I am seriously starting to think we will never get to the bottom of who he is. I would kill for just a small glimpse into his mind. What he's really thinking, how he really feels, what is going on in there?!

The ever evolving relationship between the two takes some pretty heavy turns in here, but they aren't always good ones. Every time I think we're getting somewhere, something else pops up to block their path. The tension, the sexual chemistry gets stronger by the day and will eventually come to a head-I'm just not sure if the impending explosion will be a good one, a great one, or a devastating one. These two have been through so much together, saved each other's lives countless time, lean on and rely on each other more than any other. Add in everything going on around them and it makes for one hell of a read. As always, I recommend reading this with what I have come to dub as the 'EIT Survival Kit'.
1-Bright lights, or at the very least, a few night lights.
2-Booze.
3-A blanky, or teddy bear. Something comforting and soothing.
4-A very large watchdog. Or in my case, a 13lb snuggler.
But most importantly-READ THIS SERIES. It's a must for all horror/paranormal lovers.

~My heart started to jump around sporadically, my nerves were on fire. I loved and hated it at the same time. I hated what he was doing to me, but I loved him. I hated my feelings, but…I loved him. I hated that he could just look at me like that and I couldn’t think of anything else.~
This hasn’t been the best series that I’ve read by Ms. Halle but I’ve enjoyed the crazy adventures Perry and Dex find themselves in. Her insane crush on him has had me feeling very uncomfortable as has his strange interaction with her, only because he has a girlfriend. I don’t condone cheating and was very disgusted at KH romanticizing the notion of cheating. This book has disillusioned me in many aspects, not only the cheating but Perry’s self esteem leaves a lot to be desired.

With that being said once we get past all of the ‘relationship’ drama and into the nitty gritty of the leper colony, that part itself was very good and a bit scary. Too bad we have to read over two hundred pages of nonsense before getting to the good part.

I need a long break from this series, not sure if I even want to continue reading a series about two people whom I’ve lost all respect for...probably not...
