The "Tale of the Kin" series has quickly become my favorite fantasy series of the last 20 or so years. Forgoing chapter long battle sequences or much swordplay at all for that matter, Douglas Hulick relies primarily on his skill with dialog and an ability to seamlessly incorporate magic into a finely crafted tale. Where too many fantasy authors just throw you into a story and expect you to sink or swim immediately, Hulick's writing leads the reader along with a style that doesn't leave you wondering from one minute to the next what you might have missed 4 chapters ago that would explain what just happened. The magic deployed by several characters in the books has an organic feel to it, it is not obtrusive, intrusive or overwhelming and just seems to make sense for some reason.

There are no knights in shining armor, charming innocents or grand larger than life hero's in this world. Just great characters. I have a 75/20/5 rating scale with the fantasy books I read. 75% of them make we wish I had never bought them, 20% intrigue me enough to probably try the next in the series and a rare 5% leave me in awe and pacing the floor waiting for the next installment. The Tale of the Kin is just such a series...I can't wait for the next book. One geek related complaint...maps please.

Don't get me wrong, Among Thieves was 5 star material as well, but I could figure out most of how it would end by about page 50. (Still an incredible ride though, like just seeing the enter/exit platform of a roller coaster.) This one though... To go with the roller coaster metaphor, more like getting on while blindfolded? Truly excellent. I originally borrowed a copy from the library, but I wasn't even halfway through when I decided this was something I needed to own. The only bad part is the third book Hulick is apparently contracted to write isn't out yet.
I really enjoyed Mr. Hulick's book "Among Thieves" with it's twists & turns & surprises and I have been some what patiently waiting for "Sworn in Steel" ever since I met a friend of Mr. Hulick's here in Minnesota who let me know it was coming out.

It was well worth the wait.

"Sworn In Steel" starts off some 3 months after "Among Thieves" and now the main character Drothe is a crime-lord called a "Gray Prince" but the road that got him that job now brings trouble and an adventure Drothe never expects with just as many twists, turns & surprises as "Among Thieves".

Mr. Hulick - I hope you get the next book out sooner!!
Loved the book. For me this series has been the first truly different/off the beaten path fantasy story in a long time. There were too many criminals and crime bosses to be realistic for one city in the first book but then this Is fantasy and this book doesn't deal with that aspect much. The plot was very interesting with a healthy dose of humor and the descriptions of places/characters/people was not pedantic or space filler material it usually is in most fantasy stories these days.

The book does not end with a cliffhanger and carries well as a stand alone story like the first book, which again is very refreshing considering only a few authors (among those I have read at least) are courteous enough to the reader to do this.
Waiting for this book was one of the most excruciating things I had to do. After finishing the first book, the break up of Drothe's friendship with Bronze Degan left me heartbroken. I mourned for their friendship because while reading the previous book, the bond the two characters had with each other was, to me, so beautiful. The absolute trust, the understanding, and the sacrifices they are willing to make for one another is something everyone would want to have in a friend, me included. To have it end the way it did in the last book, made me want to read Sworn in Steel right a way. Sadly, the book was delayed and the release date was unknown. It felt like the book would never come out. When it finally came out, I did not care how much it was or how early/late the hour was, I needed to get my hands on it as fast as possible and start reading it. And "start reading it" I did, however, it was more like I devoured it. Finished the book in less than 2 days! Loved what took place, loved seeing Bronze Degan again with Drothe (even if things are still strained between the two) and, most of all, loved how the book ended and where the story is headed. Now I am once again left to wonder when the "third" book will be released. (Big SIGH....)
This book, and its predecessor, Among Thieves, reminds me of one of my favorite series, Thieves World, by Robert Lynn Asprin and Lynn Abbey. Mr. Hulick has created a rich new world, filled with characters that come alive and seem to take on a life of their own, staying with you even after you've put down his books. The world building is exquisite, filled with so many cultures, factions and magic systems. Mr. Hulick has an amazing eye for detail, going so far as to describe his protagonist's predilection for good food and making that food come alive on the page. The plot is intricate and well thought out, leaving you guessing and surprised to the very end. The only thing I am disappointed about is that there are only two books in this series. I would happily pay for another dozen. Please write more!
It is great to see that Mr. Hulick was able to follow up book 1 with a sequel that was equally impressive. The characters are very deep and continue to grow. I love the change of scenery from book to book. The plot is well thought out the pace is tight. I hope to see many more novels from Douglas Hulick in the near future. I would recommend both books to anyone who has enjoyed the works of Brent Weeks or Mark Lawrence (among others).

One of the attributes of both books that I greatly enjoy, is that both book 1 and book 2 have a definite start, a plot that goes somewhere, and a finish. Yes, at the end of the book you know there is still more in this world for Drothe, but you aren't left at the end with a bad cliff hanger that you won't remember anything about in a year when the next novel comes out.
