In Total Surrender is a satisfying romance read that also has a good plot, enjoyable characters, and plenty of angst. The novel, which is fairly long, does employ a fairly awkward, almost stream of consciousness, narrative in the beginning that evens out and makes more sense as the novel progresses. In the beginning, I actually kept rereading paragraphs, unsure if I was missing something. Much of the early part of the novel is from the perspective of Andreas Merrick, who is about as anti-hero as you can get: he runs a nefarious business, he doesn’t interact well with others, and he is fairly violent. I have to give the author a lot of credit for creating a hero that manages to be both dark and attractive: too many romance novelists say rather than show their hero is dangerous - Andreas Merrick actually lives up to his reputation!
Andreas is pretty much invulnerable, except, we learn early on, from the charms of Prudence Pace, a chipper heiress to a carriage company. Merrick has been investigating the Pace family for business purposes and finds himself drawn to a woman who is his opposite in every way, but the tables are turned when Prudence seeks Andreas’ help and becomes more and more enmeshed in his life and business affairs.
I did not read the precursor novel, One Night is Never Enough, which focuses on Roman Merrick , Andreas’ foster brother and business partner. One Night is Never Enough probably (hopefully) explains more clearly the business of the Merricks, but I don’t think it is actually entirely necessary to read it before reading In Total Surrender. From what I learned of Roman, who is on his honeymoon throughout most of this book, my preference remained for the dark and tortured Andreas.
Andreas is an extremely attractive, if unorthodox and morally questionable, hero, and the reader benefits from insight into his mind. I really enjoyed how completely susceptible he was to Phoebe’s charms and the way she dominated his mind. Phoebe was a great foil to Andreas. When we only experience her from Andreas’ perspective, she is somewhat annoying; once the novel progresses to her point of view, Phoebe’s machinations, intelligence, and fun personality truly emerges. Phoebe is dedicated to protecting her vulnerable family and its business and she ably balances these concerns with her burgeoning attraction to Andreas. I loved how the sweet and innocent Phoebe pursues Andreas, a predator who is so unused to being they prey.
All in all, I found it to be an unexpectedly great read with lots of danger and threats, an interesting unfolding of secrets, a dark hero, a clever and cute heroine, sizzling romance, and plot that makes you wonder how it all will resolve. I couldn't finish it in one sitting, but I liked it so much, that I got up early to keeping reading! I don't like getting up early, so that says a lot about In Total Surrender!

In Total Surrender edition by Anne Mallory Romance eBooks Reviews
This book was a page turner for me. I couldn't wait to see how Phoebe was going to break down all of Andreas' barriers. In fact, I liked this story better than the prequel of Roman and Charlotte 's story. But, the 2 together make it a wonderful two-part series. For me, this was one of Mallory's better books. I've read several of her books and really enjoyed this one the most. She had several secondary plots within the main story that kept me guessing. Hope everyone else enjoys! Happy reading!!
Finally a heroine who is the aggressor in the relationship. Not that the heroine of this book, Phoebe, was aggressive but she did push the hero, Andreas, out of his dark shadows and into the light of smiles and joy that she represented.
I also loved the twists and turns of this story - and how well written it was. A great read!
I'm addicted! I love Anne Mallory' s books. We are introduced to Andreas in 3 nights of sin. I was so excited after I realized he had his own story. He's dark and brooding and She's light and funny. Great story!
Anne Mallory KNOWS humans. She is an expert on their nature, their behavior, their emotions. She strikes you tothe core with her remarkable understanding of soulful, deep, and intense connections between a man and a woman. If you want tepid meet-and-greet stories polluted with an over-abundance of sex and misunderstandings, you should read someone else. If you want to be challenged by the complex and expertly written characters, then wisely read Anne Mallory.
This isn't a story you can skim through; it's one that will make you think and feel--it is an experience and you'll be able to take something away from it.
I've read "In Total Surrender" and "One Night" twice now and have no troubling appreciating Anne Mallory's subtle brilliance during each read. She consistently writes genuine and accurate depth of feeling, narrative thought and true forms of expression in her characters, all while linking these qualities to a unique but wholly believable tale.
